There aren't really that many non-tameable beasts out there -- most of them are unique named individuals, quest bosses, or dungeon/raid mobs that you either won't see or get the chance to tame very often. And for a lot of mobs that look "maybe tameable", you don't need an addon to tell you whether they are: the skull-faced boars in RFD are Undead, but the similar-looking ones in EPL are Beasts, and the Helboars/Felboars of the Blasted Lands and Outland are all Demons.

I'd say that the new pet system makes it easier to tell which beasts know which skills -- all pets come with Growl, Cower, and a basic focus dump (Claw, Bite, and Smack are just the same thing with different names), and all beasts of the same family come with the same skills. No longer do you have to worry about which wolves have Furious Howl, etc.

Furthermore, I think an addon doing just what Hunter's Helper did would be less useful in the new pet system. Now that there are 32 family-specific pet abilities, it's a lot harder to keep it all in your head. Sure, you could get a tooltip telling you that Mature Silkwing has Serenity Dust (Rank 5)... but is that really helpful if you have to then look up what Serenity Dust does?

I don't doubt that there are things an addon similar to Hunter's Helper could do that would be useful in the new pet system. Heck, an in-game quick reference to Petopia's entire database might be pretty cool. But I just don't see the need for such being anywhere near as great as that for what HH did pre-patch. Since I lately have very limited time to spend on addons, I've chosen to focus it elsewhere... but if some other enterprising tinkerer wanted to make use of the old HH code to produce something more useful to 3.0 hunters, they'd be more than welcome.

I would like to thank you for the help your add ons have given me. I really hope that you will reconsider you decision of discontinuing this Mod. I really miss being able to tell at a glance It a beasts are tamable or not, and if so what their skills are. Not all beasts in the same class are tamable. A good example of this are Boars. The boars of the eastern plague lands don’t look that they are tamable but they are. Whereas the boars in Hellfire look like they should be tamable but are not.

Lastly with all the changes to the pet skills it is very hard to what pet knows what skills. Being able to see their skills really helps in deciding if I want to tame something or not. Also being able to see what foods they eat and making sure you have it, helps a lot too.Yes I know there is Beast lore But you have to click on it one at a time for each and every beast you check out.

I hate to see Hunters Helper retired–It has helped me greatly!! I hope WOW patch is as good– It was a much needed item and was used throughout the world– Thanks for your consideration and the fact you took your time to do what needed to be done. Many Thanks

Thank you for Hunter’s Helper. It made huntering much easier and more fun, and I kept it enabled on all my characters, even the non-hunters, because for me it was such an integral part of the game I couldn’t imagine playing without it.

Thank you for all the work you've done, it's much appreciated.

I will still use some of your other addons such as Feed-O-Matic and FactionFriend, but I will miss Hunter's Helper. Even though the patch is coming out I don't think it needs to be completely retired, but I understand why it's going to be.
